What with the ridiculous number of hits the blade can get and the melee enemies coming to you. I admit that I fully upgraded the Ripper when I first used it on account of playing a new game+ (zealot) so maybe my observations aren't completely accurate compared to a weaker Ripper but I can't see less damage and duration making a difference too often.

One blade can take out 3 necromorphs on average and potentially more. Problem is you only need one close quarters weapon and the Ripper is instantly effective both in breathing room potential and ammo cost. I didn't invest many if any power nodes so it definitely gets better. It's definitely more powerful but sometimes it doesn't stun a Necromorph when you need it to and that means taking a hit.
